What does Proton VPN Plus actually include?

Does Proton VPN Plus include Proton Mail as a paid product? It does not. VPN Plus is the standalone VPN subscription: 10 simultaneous device connections, access to 20,000+ servers across 140+ countries, Secure Core multi-hop routing, the NetShield DNS blocker, P2P support and Tor over VPN. Every item on that list is a VPN feature. There is no mailbox, no custom domain support and no additional storage attached to it.

The confusion is understandable, because Proton sells one account across every product it makes. Subscribe to VPN Plus and you can sign straight into Mail, Calendar, Drive and Pass with the same credentials, and they all load and work. They work on their free tiers. Paying for the VPN does not upgrade any of them, and the marketing line about free access to Proton Mail on the VPN pricing page reads, to a lot of people, like inclusion.

What does Proton Unlimited include instead?

Proton Unlimited is the plan people usually mean when they ask does Proton VPN Plus include Proton Mail. It carries everything in VPN Plus and adds the paid versions of the other Proton services on top, with 500 GB of storage shared between Mail and Drive.

That storage figure is the one to check against your actual usage, because it is shared rather than allocated per service. Fill Drive with backups and your mailbox competes for the same pool. For most people it is far more room than they will ever need, but anyone treating Drive as a photo archive should do the maths before assuming.

Why does Proton VPN Plus include Proton Mail in so many people’s heads?

Proton AG reorganised its plans a few years ago, folding what used to be separate ProtonMail and ProtonVPN subscriptions into a single account system with Proton Unlimited sitting at the top. Older articles, forum posts and half-remembered advice still describe the previous arrangement, and the naming does not help: a plan called Plus sounds like it ought to be more than just the VPN.

The second source of confusion is that everything genuinely does work when you log in. Nothing tells you the mailbox you are looking at is the free tier until you hit the storage ceiling or try to add a custom domain, and the free Proton Mail limits are worth reading before you assume. Check the plan name in your Proton account settings rather than guessing, because the dashboard states plainly which subscription you hold.

Which plan should you actually buy?

If you want the VPN and nothing more, the Proton VPN Plus 2-year plan is the cheapest route in once you have settled how the free tier compares with Plus, and it is the right call when your email already lives somewhere you trust. Buying Unlimited to get a VPN you could otherwise have for roughly a third of the price is money badly spent, particularly if you have no intention of migrating years of correspondence to a new address. Go the other way if the mailbox is the point. Moving an inbox is genuinely tedious, so the honest test is whether you would still pay for encrypted email at full price with no VPN attached. Can you upgrade to Unlimited later without wasting money?

Proton generally converts the unused portion of an existing subscription into account credit when you move up a plan, so buying VPN Plus now and switching to Unlimited in six months does not throw away what you already paid. Downgrading is the awkward direction. If you have filled a 500 GB Drive and then drop to a plan without that allowance, you have to get back under the limit before the change takes effect, which means deleting or exporting files under time pressure.
