Is pCloud Safe?

Yes, pCloud is safe for most people in 2026, but there is an important distinction between standard storage and pCloud Encryption. Your files are encrypted in transit and at rest by default, but true zero-knowledge privacy only applies if you use the paid Crypto Folder.

This page is part of the pCloud FAQ Hub.

What kind of security does pCloud use by default?

By default, pCloud protects files with encrypted transfer and encrypted storage, which is already a solid baseline for everyday use. In simple English, that means your files are protected while moving between your device and pCloud’s servers, and they are also stored in encrypted form once they arrive.

That said, default pCloud storage is not the same thing as zero-knowledge encryption. pCloud manages the keys for standard storage features, which helps it offer previews, streaming, and easier file handling, but it also means the highest privacy tier is not active out of the box.

Is pCloud zero-knowledge by default?

No. This is the bit many glossy reviews glide past. pCloud only becomes zero-knowledge when you enable pCloud Encryption, also known as the Crypto Folder.

According to pCloud’s own documentation, files placed in the Crypto Folder are encrypted on your device before upload, and the encryption keys are not stored on pCloud’s servers. That means only you hold the Crypto Pass needed to unlock those files, which is the proper privacy-first setup serious users actually want.

BAIZAAR’s pCloud Crypto Pick

Files in the Crypto Folder are encrypted on your device before upload.

Is pCloud safe enough for private documents and photos?

Yes, provided you use the right part of the product for the right job. For normal files, backups, and media libraries, standard pCloud security is perfectly adequate for most people. For passports, contracts, medical records, or anything you would not want a provider theoretically able to access, use the Crypto Folder or pair pCloud with Cryptomator.

This hybrid approach is actually one of pCloud’s strengths. You can keep everyday files convenient and searchable, while locking sensitive material behind client-side encryption where even pCloud cannot read it.

What makes pCloud safer than Google Drive for privacy?

The biggest difference is intent and architecture. Google Drive sits inside Google’s wider data ecosystem, while pCloud’s business is cloud storage itself. pCloud also offers an optional zero-knowledge folder, which Google Drive does not provide natively.

If your goal is convenience first, Google still takes it home in regards to collaboration. If your goal is reducing exposure to surveillance-heavy ecosystems, pCloud is the safer direction of travel. That is why privacy-minded users keep comparing the two.
